Augwynne Djo

The Last Jedi

Augwynne Djo is the Clan Mother of the Singing Mountain Clan on Dathomir, a Force-user whose authority combines matriarchal command with a careful willingness to extend trust. Her brief but consequential alliance with Jax Pavan turns her from a guardian of her clan’s boundaries into the custodian of dangerous Sith knowledge—and, ultimately, the person who helps Jax relinquish it.

Identity and Authority

Augwynne first appears above Jax in the gallery of a roundhouse, watching him from the second floor. She is described as perhaps fifty-five or sixty standard years old, tall and regal, with moonlight-colored hair held back from her handsome face by an aurodium circlet. The impression of rank is matched by her command: when she tells her acolytes to bring Jax up to her, they immediately flank him and lead him through the connected passages to her chamber.

Her authority is not merely ceremonial. In the chamber, she receives Jax seated beside a bright hearth that consumes no fuel, while her people attend her and follow her direction. Yet the scene presents her as more than a ruler enforcing obedience. Jax senses sorrow beneath her serene manner and feels an immediate concord with her, believing that she, like him, has suffered betrayal and loss. The recognition is intuitive rather than a disclosed account of her past; the narrative gives no further history of those losses.

Meeting Jax and Setting Terms

Augwynne’s first exchange with Jax establishes both a difference in outlook and a basis for mutual regard. When he describes what he seeks as redemption, she cautions that redemption is difficult to achieve. Jax recognizes her as Augwynne Djo, and their encounter becomes a measured meeting between two Force-users. The Zabrak warrior nearby grows restless as they silently assess one another, but Augwynne’s attention remains controlled; she decides that Jax is to be brought to her rather than treated simply as an intruder.

She does not grant Jax unrestricted access to the ruin he wants to visit. Instead, she permits the visit on the condition that one of the Sisterhood accompany him. The condition makes her hospitality deliberate: she gives him a path forward while keeping a member of her community present. Her continuing Force connection with him underscores that this is an active judgment, not an indifferent concession.

When Magash Drashi expresses curiosity about Jedi ways and a wish to learn something of value to the clan, Augwynne approves of the sentiment. She then makes the practical danger plain. It is already past midday, and the temperature will drop at sunset, making the ruins more hazardous even for people immersed in the Force. Jax chooses to leave immediately because he cannot afford to waste time. Augwynne permits the departure and holds out his lightsaber, returning it as he prepares to go. Her decision balances caution with respect for the urgency that drives him.

The Holocron and an Act of Trust

Augwynne’s role deepens when Jax seeks knowledge from Darth Ramage’s Sith Holocron. In the ruined chamber, the ritual involves Jax and three women kneeling with joined hands above the Holocron, their blood mingled across its etched surface. When its vertices turn and the device opens like a blossom to reveal the data crystal, the chanting ceases. Augwynne and the others withdraw their hands; Duala binds Augwynne’s wounds, then Magash’s, before Magash tends to Jax. The ritual leaves Augwynne physically wounded, making her participation more than a formal endorsement of Jax’s quest.

The opening has an immediate consequence for Jax: the Holocron pours its Force-sealed contents into his mind, overwhelming his attention. Augwynne does not try to claim or use the knowledge. After Jax recognizes that Darth Vader might exploit what he has learned, he asks to leave the Sith Holocron with the Sisterhood. He trusts Augwynne not to use it for ill or let it fall into the hands of the dark side. She accepts the responsibility. Her choice makes her the guardian of an object whose danger has already become personal to Jax, while placing the clan’s stewardship in opposition to the knowledge’s possible misuse.

The Promise and Its Fulfillment

Jax’s request goes beyond safeguarding the Holocron. If he survives his attempt to rescue his friend, he wants to return so Augwynne can purge the knowledge from his mind completely, ensuring that neither Vader nor Jax himself can misuse it. Augwynne agrees without qualification. Magash’s response conveys the weight of the request: the words chill her, and she becomes aware again of the shadows clinging to Jax. Augwynne’s assent thus binds her to a future act of care whose necessity is inseparable from the peril of what Jax now carries.

The epilogue confirms that she keeps her word. Jax makes a brief stop on Dathomir, long enough for Augwynne to relieve him of Darth Ramage’s dark knowledge. The narrative calls his decision to trust a Dathomiri Witch risky, but also presents the trust itself as a step back toward the light. The change is precise rather than total: Jax can still remember what happened on Kantaros Station, but how he influenced those events has become a blank; he can no longer sense time currents, though he retains the concept that they exist, and the rest of Ramage’s ideas have faded almost to transparency. Augwynne’s significance lies in this completed promise. She first places a boundary around Jax’s access to danger, then helps him encounter it, protects the source of its power, and finally helps him surrender what should not remain within him.
